The Covid-19 pandemic was well controlled in the country, the EU and Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA) has been implemented, so industrial production in the fourth quarter of 2020 has prospered with an increase in value added by 4.8% over the same period last year. For the whole year 2020, the added value of the industry increased by 3.36% compared to 2019, of which the manufacturing increased by 5.82%, playing a key role in leading the overall growth of industry and the whole economy.

The added value of the whole industry in 2020 was estimated to increase by 3.36% over the previous year (increased by 5.1% in the first quarter; by 1.1% in the second quarter; by 2.34% in the third quarter; by 4.80% in the fourth quarter). Of which, the processing and manufacturing industry increased by 5.82% ( increased by 7.12% in the first quarter; 3.38% in the second quarter; 3.86% in the third quarter; 8.63% in the fourth quarter), contributed 1.25 percentage points to the overall growth of the whole economy; electricity production and distribution increased by 3.92%, contributed 0.19 percentage points; water supply, waste and wastewater management and treatment rose by 5.51%, contributing 0.04 percentage points; the mining sector decreased by 5.62% (due to the decrease in crude oil production by 12.6% and natural gas by 11.5%), decreasing 0.36 percentage points in the general growth.

As for usage of industrial products, the index of industrial production (IIP) of intermediate products (for the production process) in 2020 increased by 4% over the same period last year; the IIP of products for final consumption increased by 2.9% (of which products for residents’ consumption increased by 2.1%).

In 2-digit industrial activities, the 2020-IIP of some activities decreased or increased low in comparison with the same period last year: Mining support service activities decreased by 33.5%; extraction of crude petroleum and natural gas went down by 12%; manufacture of motor and motor bike dropped by 9.7%; repair and installation of machinery and equipment declined by 9.4%; manufacture of motor vehicles dropped by 6,7%; manufacture of beverage, Sewerage and sewer treatment activities declined by 5.2%; manufacture of wood and of products of wood, manufacture of wearing apparel, manufacture of leather and related products, printing and reproduction of recorded media respectively declined by 5%, 4.2%, 2.4%, 2.1%; manufacture of other non-metallic mineral products, manufacture of machinery and equipment n.e.c, manufacture of tobacco products slightly increased by 1.7%, 1.8%, 2.7%, accordingly. Besides, a number of industries saw a sharp increase in the 2020-IIP and mainly contributed to the overall growth rate: Manufacture of pharmaceuticals, medicinal chemical and botanical products (27.1%); manufacture of basic metals (14.4%); mining of metal ores (13.1%); manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products (11.4%); manufacture of electronic, computers and optical products (11.3%); manufacture of papers and paper products (7.9%); manufacture of chemicals and chemical products (7.3%); manufacture of furniture (7%); waste collection, treatment and disposal activities (6%); manufacture of food products (5.3%); manufacture of rubber and plastic products (5.1%); mining of coal and lignite (5%).

Some key industrial products in 2020 decreased or increased slightly against the previous year: Refined sugar decreased by 22.9%; beer decreased  by 13.9%; Liquidized gas (LPG) down 13%; extracted crude oil decreased by 12.6%; natural gas decreased by 11.5%; textile fabric from artificial yarn decreased by 8.9%; motorbikes decreased by 7.7%; clothes down by 4.9%; leather shoes, footwear and automobiles both decreased by 2.9%; animal feed decreased by 2%; fresh milk increased by 1%; aluminum increased by 2.1%. Besides, a number of products increased significantly: Phone components increased by 22%; television by 20.7%; laminated steel increased by 16.4%; powder milk and steel bar and corners increased by 9.1%; textile fabric from natural yarn increased by 8.1%; chemical paint increased by 6.8%; mono sodium glutamate increased by 6.3%; processed seafood increased by 5.9%; ure fertilizer increased by 5.7%; iron and crude steel increased by 5.3%.

The index of industrial shipment (IIS) of the manufacturing in December/2020 decreased by 2.3% over the previous month and increased by 6.9% over the same period last year. Overall, in 2020, the IIS of the manufacturing activities increased by 3.3% compared to last year, of which some activities enjoyed a significant growth of the IIS: Manufacture of pharmaceuticals, medicinal chemical and botanical products (82.8%); Manufacture of machinery and equipment n.e.c (18%); the manufacture of basic metals (11.7%); manufacture of papers and paper products (9.2%);  Manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products (6.8%); manufacture of chemical and chemical products (5.7%); manufacture of furniture (5.3%). However, the IIS of some activities showed a slight increase or decrease: Manufacture of fabricated metal products (except machinery and equipment), manufacture of textiles, manufacture of other non-metallic mineral products went up by 1.8%, 1.7% and 1.6%, accordingly; printing and reproduction of recorded media and tobacco products both increased by 0.9%; manufacture of leather and related products, manufacture of rubber and plastic products; manufacture of wood and of products of wood and cork; manufacture of wearing apparel; manufacture of beverage, manufacture of motor vehicles, manufacture of pharmaceuticals, medicinal chemical and botanical products; manufacture of motor and motorbike decreased by 1.9%, 2.7%, 3.3%, 4.8%, 6.3%, 8.3%, 11.7%, 12.3%, accordingly.

The Inventory index of the manufacturing as of December 30, 2020 increased by 25.3% over the same period last year (13.6% in the same time in 2019), of which some industries had low or decreased inventory indexes: Manufacture of leather and related products increased by 1.4%; manufacture of motor vehicle decreased by 10.9%; manufacture of paper and paper products down 15.4%; manufacture of electrical equipment down 22.2%; manufacture of chemicals and chemical products decreased by 75%. Some industries have high inventory indexes over the same period last year: Manufacture of coke and refined petroleum products (231.6%); manufacture of computer, electronic and optical products (143.9%); manufacture of basic metal (126%); manufacture of rubber and plastic (79.3%); manufacture of tobacco (56.6%); Manufacture of chemicals and chemical products (44.5%); printing and reproduction of recorded media (37.7%); manufacture of motor and motorbike (37%); manufacture of prefabricated metal (except for machinery and equipment) (35.2%); manufacture of wood and of products of wood and cork (27%); manufacture of wearing apparel (24.3%).

The average index of industrial inventory of the manufacturing in 2020 reached 71.9% (68.8% in 2019), of which some activities experienced the high index of industrial inventory: the manufacture of textile (119.6%); %); the manufacture of wood and of products of wood and cork (110.6%); the manufacture of chemicals and chemical products (103%); the manufacture of fabricated metal products (97.3%); manufacture of food products (94.4%); manufacture of rubber and plastic products (88.7%); manufacture of electrical equipment (87.9%).

The number of employees working in industrial enterprises as of 1st December 2020 increased by 1.4% over the same period last month and decreased by 2.3% compared to the same period last year, of which the number of employees in the state-owned enterprises decreased by 1.9%; but the figure in the non-state enterprises, the FDI enterprises increased by 4.3%, and 1.4%, respectively. At that time, the number of employees working in mining enterprises decreased by 1.8% compared to the same period last year; the number of employees in the manufacturing, the production and distribution of electricity, the water supply, sewerage, waste management and remediation activities decreased by 2.4%, 0.4%, 0.7%, respectively.
