On September 16-20, 2019, the mission of General Statistics Office of Vietnam (GSO) led by Mr. Nguyen Bich Lam, Director General of GSO paid a visit and worked with the Italian National Institute of Statistics (Istat).
Since the establishment of diplomatic relations on March 23, 1973 between the two countries, the GSO and Istat had mutually supportive relationships in many fields. The Istat is one of the world leading statistics agencies with deeply professional staff and modern and effective management method, has been contributing to the development of the global statistical community. The GSO and Istat signed the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in 2014, creating a foundation to prepare practical and effective cooperation activities based on the capacity and conditions of both sides. As a result, in 2018, after the efforts of the Italian National Institute of Statistics and the General Statistics Office, the Italian Government through the Italian Agency for Development and Cooperation (AICS) supported a Technical Assistance Project for the GSO namely “Improve Vietnams national statistical system” over a period of 3 years, starting from August 2018.
In the framework of the mission to Italy, on September 16, 2019, Mr. Nguyen Bich Lam, Director General of GSO and Mr. Carlo Blangiardo, President of Istat signed the 2019 MoU. The purpose of this MoU is to further strengthen the cooperation between GSO and Istat (hereinafter also referred as “the Parties”) in the area of statistics and other related fields of mutual interest.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, Mr. Nguyen Bich Lam expressed the belief that with the spirit of cooperation and responsibility of both sides, the GSO and the ISTAT would closely coordinate, allocate resources and create the most favorable conditions for successful implementation of MoU.
The 2019 MoU is an important factor to motivate the development of the GSO, to strengthen the friendship between the two agencies. The content of MoU covers all activities of the statistical production process of a modern statistical agency. The MoU also clearly shows the long-term desire of cooperation between agencies as well as the feasibility and convenience for doing later in all areas of cooperation based on the wishes and strengths of each side.
